SCOTTISH HIGHER EDUCATION STATISTICS
1998/99
Issued on behalf of Government
Statistical Service
Student numbers rose in Scotland in 1998-99 according to provisional
statistics on Students in Higher Education in Scotland: 1998-99,
published today by the Scottish Executive.
This news release partially updates the higher education information
for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Further Education Institutions
(FEIs) published in a news release in August 1999.
The main points are as follows:
- There were just over a quarter of a million (255,963) students
in higher education in Scotland in 1998-99, an increase of around
8,300 (3.4 per cent) on the previous year. This growth is almost
totally accounted for by an increase in part-time students, who
now make up 36 per cent of all students.
- The age distribution of students in higher education in Scotland
has shifted slightly over recent years. Although students aged
under 25 still form the majority, this has fallen from 62 per
cent in 1994-95 to 56 per cent in 1998-99. The proportion of students
aged 25 and over has increased from 37 per cent to 43 per cent
over the same period.
- There were 78,895 entrants to higher education in HEIs in Scotland
in 1998-99, an increase of almost 4,300 (6 per cent) on the previous
year. The increase in entrants to first degree courses in HEIs
from 1997-98 to 1998-99 was less than 1 per cent.
- The numbers of entrants to primary and secondary teacher training
courses in 1998-99 was virtually unchanged compared to the previous
year.
