Air Quality Strategy for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern
Ireland
The Environment Act 1995 required the Government to develop a
National Air Quality Strategy. The Strategy, originally published
in 1997, set challenging health-based targets for eight main air
pollutants. These are benzene; 1,3-butadiene; carbon monoxide; lead;
nitrogen dioxide; ozone; fine particles (PM10); and sulphur dioxide.
The predominant source for most of these pollutants is road traffic,
but industrial and domestic sources are also major contributors.
The National Air Quality Strategy has been under review since
publication and revised versions were put out for public consultation
in January and August 1999. The revised Air Quality Strategy for
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland was announced in the
Scottish
Parliament on 19 January 2000 and will tighten standards for
five of the eight air pollutants covered in the Strategy.
