1. Scotland's Railway Infrastructure
Scotland's infrastructure includes:
4,179 kilometres of track and related signalling control equipment providing a network of 2,668 route kilometres;
5,494 bridges, tunnels and viaducts;
767 level crossings;
334 stations;
10 light maintenance depots;
1295 km of route track with electrified 25kV Ac overhead lines.
The GB network (including Scotland) includes:
32,000 kilometres of track and associated signalling control equipment providing a network of more than 16,000 route kilometres;
40,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts;
9000 level crossings;
2,500 stations. With the exception of 14 major stations where Railtrack retain operational control, nearly all the remaining stations and depots are leased to train operating companies;
90 light maintenance depots;
connections to over 1000 active freight terminals.
2. The ScotRail Franchise
ScotRail operates all passenger train services in Scotland that were not part of the former Inter-City services. This amounts to approximately 95% of all passenger services run in Scotland. The remainder are provided by cross-border inter-city operators GNER, Virgin West Coast and Virgin Cross Country.
ScotRail runs 2000 trains per day covering 1.2 billion passenger miles per year.
It was the last of the 25 train operators to be franchised. In April 1997 it was franchised to the National Express Group (NEG) for seven years. The franchise expires on 31 March 2004.
Total value of the franchise is worth up to an maximum of £1.662 billion (including estimated revenue for Strathclyde Passenger Transport - SPT), based on figures agreed during the ScotRail franchise process in 1997.
Payment of subsidy for rail services provided by ScotRail (including those for SPT) will amount to a maximum of £1.371 billion over the franchise period, based on figures agreed during the ScotRail franchise process in 1997.
ScotRail is the largest train operating company (TOC) in GB in terms of services run, and the fourth largest passenger carrier.
It manages on lease from Railtrack 329 of the 334 railway stations in Scotland.
ScotRail continues to be the best performing main land TOC with punctuality of 92.3% in the latest published Passenger Rail Performance figures, covering June-September 2000.
There has been a 14% growth in passengers across ScotRail's network in the last 2 years.
ScotRail run Britain's longest domestic passenger train conveying a total of 800 beds linking London with Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness, and Fort William.
3. Strathclyde Passenger Transport Executive (SPTE) and Railways
SPT as a passenger transport authority is one of the signatories to the ScotRail franchise;
All SPT rail passenger services are provided by ScotRail;
SPT is provided with grant by The Scottish Executive to secure socially necessary rail services for its area that are otherwise commercially unviable;
The SPT network covers 334 route miles;
The network serves 180 stations;
43 million passenger journeys are on average made per year;
It is the largest commuter railway network outside London.
