The Scottish Executive Statistical Plan 2000-2001

photoForeword

The Scottish Executive has committed itself to informed decision making, extending accountability and working in partnership. Quality statistics underpin all of these aims and are vital for democratic government.

It is therefore fitting that at this stage we are publishing the first Scottish Executive Statistics Plan.

It aims to increase awareness of what is being done and planned. It presents the first comprehensive statement of developments in statistics in Scotland, at a time when the need for such information is growing considerably.

It also invites comment and provides the opportunity for Scottish users and providers of statistics to influence future development.

Publication of the Plan coincides with changes in the way in which government statistics are managed. In common with the UK Government and the other devolved administrations, the Scottish Executive is committed to ensuring that statistics are reliable, appropriate and free from political interference. The Plan contains proposals to fulfil that commitment.

We look forward to hearing your views on the content of the Plan. Your response will help shape the way the Scottish Executive proceeds in 2000-2001 and its longer-term priorities.
