A Consultation on the future of AGE AND STAGE REGULATIONS

MINISTER’S FOREWORD

MinisterThe National Debate on Education gave the people of Scotland the chance to put forward their views, ideas and priorities for our education system. Over 20,000 people from all backgrounds took part in discussions around the country from March to June 2002. This unprecedented response shows people care passionately about the education we provide and want to be involved in deciding its future. As we take forward the commitments made in response to the National Debate we will continue to involve as many people as possible.

This consultation paper fulfils one of those commitments to consult on the future of the Age and Stage regulations. These regulations determine the age at which young people in Scotland may be entered for exams and receive external certification for National Units and Courses managed by the Scottish Qualifications Authority. This is your chance to comment on a crucial aspect of our education system and whether there should be additional flexibility over when young people begin National Courses.

Your participation in this consultation will play an important part in shaping the future education of our young people.

PETER PEACOCK
Minister for Education and Young People
