Scottish Inshore Fisheries Advisory Group (SIFAG)

Sea by John Dunn

The Scottish Inshore Fisheries Advisory Group (SIFAG) was the main inshore fisheries stakeholder body from 1999 until 2011. The Group comprised a range of industry representatives, all of the component parts of Marine Scotland (i.e. policy, compliance, science), Scottish Natural Heritage, Seafish and Environment Link. SIFAG was joint author of the Strategic Framework for Inshore Fisheries in Scotland (2005), a key part of which is the establishment of Inshore Fisheries Groups (IFGs).

In 2011, Cabinet Secretary Richard Lochhead announced the creation of a new fisheries co-management group - the Fisheries Management and Conservation (FMAC) Group. This group is a high level forum for discussion of all sea fisheries management issues, including inshore fisheries, and for future joint working between the industry and Scottish Government.

FMAC now has responsibility for those areas previously dealt with by SIFAG.  The letter to SIFAG members informing them that the group was to be wound up is now available online
