Cattle inspections

Why do we inspect cattle?

The Scottish Government carry out Cattle Identification Inspections ( CIIs) under EU legislation to make sure Cattle in Stallscattle keepers are considering animal disease control and public health. The keeper of the animals is responsible for doing this and the inspection will be carried out at the individual holding.

The Scottish Government must carry out inspections on 10% of farms who keep cattle in order to comply with current EU legislation.

What do we look for?

The main purpose of the inspection is to verify that:

  • The cattle are tagged in accordance with current legislation
  • The cattle are correctly registered with the British Cattle Movement Service
  • Appropriate records are being kept relating to births deaths etc.
  • Movements of animals on and off the farm are being notified and recorded.

Where can you find out more?

The animal health web section carries lots of information about cattle inspections.
