Movements

The Cattle Tracing System (CTS) records all movements of cattle registered or imported into Great Britain since 28 September 1998. It is a legislative requirement that all cattle moves both "on" and "off" a holding and between herds are notified to the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) within 3 days.

A cattle move can be notified to BCMS in three different ways.

  • CTS Online - This is the BCMS Online service which is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It has checks built into the system that will help avoid errors going into the CTS database. It reduces paperwork and is the quickest and safest way of reporting moves to BCMS

  • BY Post - Movement cards are included in the cattle passports and certificates of registration (COR - for older animals) for reporting movements to BCMS. The movement cards are prepaid by BCMS.
  • By Email - The Standard Interface System (SIS) allows movements to be reported to BCMS by email. It is mostly used by markets but individual keepers can also use it. To use (SIS) you must register with Defra, further details can be obtained from:
