Scottish Fire and Rescue Service

The overarching purpose of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is to work in partnership with communities and with others in the public, private and third sectors, on prevention, protection and response, to improve the safety and wellbeing of people throughout Scotland.

The Scottish Government's vision for the SFRS is the achievement of better outcomes for the people and communities throughout Scotland, leading to improved safety and wellbeing, but also reflecting ways of operating in the 21st century. It reflects the excellent work it carries out in supporting and promoting community safety and wellbeing, through, for example, community safety initiatives and partnership working with health, education, and local authorities focused on prevention and early intervention, in order to improve outcomes.

The key aims of the new SFRS are to:

  • protect and improve local services, despite financial cuts, by reducing duplication and not cutting frontline outcomes
  • create more equal access to specialist support and national capacity where and when they are needed
  • strengthen the connection between local service provision and communities by creating a new formal relationship with all 32 local authorities

The new SFRS took on its full range of functions on 1 April 2013.

Wildfire Operational Guidance

The Scottish Government has published The Fire and Rescue Wildfire Operational Guidance.

This guidance has been produced to give Fire and Rescue Service personnel across the UK an additional understanding and awareness of the phenomenon of wildfire.  It examines the hazards, risks and controls relating to Fire and Rescue personnel, the personnel of other agencies and members of the public at incidents of wildfire.  It also provides a point of reference for those who may be called upon to plan for wildfire events and for those incident commanders and personnel responding to such incidents.

Fire and Rescue Service Statistics 2012 - 13

The Fire and Rescue Service Statistics 2012-13 were published today. This is the last time this publication will have the 8 separate FRSs areas and includes information on fire safety, stations, equipment, home fire safety visits and attacks on Fire and Rescue Service personnel at incidents.
