Freight Transport

Freight Policy

As stated in the Freight Action plan, our vision is for Scotland to be a place where the movement of freight through the entire supply chain is efficient and sustainable, on a transport infrastructure that is integrated and flexible - thus allowing Scotland's business to compete and grow in a global economy.

To achieve this vision, we work in partnership with all key players in the public and private sectors:

• To minimise the adverse impact of freight movements on the Environment in particular through the reduction in emissions and noise:
• To enhance Scotland's Competitiveness:
• To maintain and improve the Accessibility of rural and remote areas:
• To ensure freight transport policy Integration:
• To support the development of the freight Industry in Scotland.

We are doing this by pursuing activities that:

• Promote modal shift to rail and shipping
• Improve the efficiency and sustainability of road transport
• Balance freight and non-freight requirements in transport investment
• Minimise the negative impact of rising transport costs
• Continue business developments in the freight and logistics sector
• Target improvements to road and rail infrastructure
• Integrate freight considerations into the provision of lifeline ferry and air services
• Address the transport needs of rural business and industry
• Co-ordinate with other policy areas - such as energy policy, land use, waste disposal, and regional transport strategies - and between the public agencies
• Co-ordinate freight policy with other UK regions
• Enhance the skills and professional image in freight and logistics
• Enable the Scottish freight industry to compete effectively in the European market
