The Scottish Sustainable Marine Environment Project was financed by £250,000 from the Scottish Executive, using funding from the Scottish share of the Aggregates Levy.
The study aimed to produce recommendations to ensure the sustainable use of marine resources, including nature conservation, fisheries/aquaculture, civil engineering/alternative power generation, ports and harbours, and tourism/recreation. It was also to develop a framework to involve local communities in piloting new approaches to sustainable management.
The Scottish Sustainable Marine Environment Project was carried forward in three phases. The first two phases developed the framework for pilot management schemes aimed at demonstrating the benefits of a sustainable development approach to Scotland's marine environment which was to be pursued in the final phase.
Phase 2 was taken forward to a draft report in March 2004, with Phase 3 to start in the second half of 2004.
