ScotAsh, a joint venture between ScottishPower and Lafarge Cement UK, takes the ash output from ScottishPower's coal-fired power stations and re-engineers it into high quality products for the construction industry.
Environmentally-friendly products from ScotAsh, including blended cements and grouts, are used in the construction of roads, buildings, windfarms, harbours and other major projects throughout the UK.
ScotAsh, based at Longannet Power Station, Kincardine-on-Forth, uses a cutting edge electrostatic process to reduce the carbon content of the Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA) making it suitable for a wider range of applications.
During the last two years the company has diversified to produce specialist materials, such as environmental binders and lightweight fillers that enhance the structural integrity of concrete, plastics and other materials.
Managing Director Peter Quinn said: "Using PFA in construction products creates strong environmental benefits, displacing the need for hundreds of thousands of tonnes of virgin aggregates each year and significantly reducing the volume of ash disposed of to landfill.
"The re-use of ash also saves energy on crushing, grinding and heating raw materials. During the last three years we have saved more than 100,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions - equivalent to taking 32,000 cars off the road for a year."
ScotAsh have also made good savings through water, energy and waste reduction measures, they share best practice with others, and have good commitment and communication throughout the business.
