Sustainable Design in Architecture

A Sustainable Design in Architecture project was carried out over 2 years, 2002-03 and 2003-04, with grant of £600,000 coming from the Aggregates Levy.

A sustainable approach to building design requires that we design and manage our built environments in ways that take proper account of the wider contexts and consequences that we impose globally and locally. Sustainable design is not just about ad-hoc technical solutions but requires an integrated and imaginative design-led approach that takes adequate account of the inter-relationships of buildings and their environment.

The key project activities included:

  • Targeted client education and advice programmes:
    • A touring exhibition and publication
    • Client education guides for 4 building types - schools, private sector housing, office buildings and social housing
    • Green Business Strategies.
  • Community involvement programme:
    • "Sustainable Designs on You" training sessions for housing associations
    • Six Cities Workshops project for local government staff;
    • Grant-aided community projects
    • Education programme for schools.
  • Publication of design guides and case studies for architects and other professionals:
    • Best practice guides - tailored to specific groups, intended to address the need to follow commitment through
    • Professional education - programmes including an accreditation scheme and case studies
    • Seminars and workshops highlighting the environmental and business case for adopting a sustainable design policy.

The initiative was carried out by The Lighthouse in Glasgow, Scotland's National Centre for Architecture, Design and the City. As an institution, The Lighthouse provides a focus for Scotland's thriving architecture, design and creative communities setting them within an international context. In addition to events and projects within the building, it delivers initiatives that extend across the length and breadth of Scotland, thereby ensuring the widest possible access to architecture, design and the built environment. The second phase of the programme continued from 2004.
