SISTECH

The Scottish Institute of Sustainable Technology (SISTech), a not-for-profit company, is a partnership between Heriot-Watt University and Scottish Enterprise. The company was formed with the remit to create a centre of excellence in Scotland to promote the practical delivery of sustainable development through business development, education, and research and development. SISTech aims to promote and encourage sustainable development and the use of sustainable technology in the business, commercial and domestic areas.

SISTech received Sustainable Action Fund grant in 2001-02 and 2002-03 to set up a new website www.siscotland.co.uk as an information source for sustainable development in Scotland . The Sustainability Information Scotland (SIS) website was designed with interlinked subsections aimed at community and business needs - attempting to bring together current efforts in sustainable development across Scotland .

The site linked to a sub-site promoting an initiative being run by Scottish Enterprise Glasgow aimed at encouraging businesses to adopt sustainable business practices (Glasgow Business Efficiency Initiative). Further links with other initiatives were planned.

SIS was not intended to be a static site. One purpose was to encourage readers to contribute to the site or give their views, with ease of navigation and maximum accessibility. It was designed to be viewed using all operating systems, any computer platform or browser, and by people with disabilities - accessible using screen reader technology, for example, without any loss of information.

SIS was set up with a wide range of links to other sustainability websites to create an integrated picture of sustainability in Scotland . SIS aimed to influence behaviour and practice through a cross fertilisation of ideas and actions to ensure sustainable development becomes relevant to everyone.

Though the grant led to a good result, SISTech was later unable to allocate a resource to keep the website up to date.
