The Royal Town Planning Institute is "chartered
to advance the science and art of national, regional
and local town planning for the benefit of the public"
with key focus placed on public participation.
They received Sustainable
Action Grant funding to work along side the Royal Town
Planning Institute's (RTPI) annual conference from
10-15 June 2001 at the Scottish Exhibition and
Conference Centre (SECC) with the aim of producing an
environmentally friendly model of Drumchapel (an
EcoCity project). They worked with 40 children from the
Drumchapel area to plan, design and build a 20x20 scale
future model of the area.
The EcoCity project was a unique model to show
the potential for the construction industry and how
those concerned with urban regeneration can understand
their inter-generational responsibilities, with
particular reference to sustainable development.
The key outputs of the project were the production of
a video of the project to be used at conferences and
travelled widely. In the field of children's rights and
citizenship, the EcoCity project will be used as an example
of good practice with regard to consultation with
children.
