Concern for Swifts ( Scotland ) aims to raise awareness of the need to take action
to conserve the swift colonies of Scotland and to encourage and facilitate appropriate action.
It collects and co-ordinates records of swift colonies,
promotes and carries out action to retain or create new
sites and provides links between interested individuals and
organisations.
The project received Sustainable Action Grant funding
to put in place ten "swift-friendly" sites, either in new
buildings or in renovation projects. The aim was to
increase the number and range of projects that can act as
examples to others and as a catalyst to further action
across Scotland . Thus the immediate objective of the project was to
accelerate action. By documenting each project and making
the documentation available on the Concern for Swifts
( Scotland ) website and on paper, it would provide examples of
good practice for other local authorities and conservation
organisations to follow.
The key output from the project was the installation
of ten new designs in Glasgow and other areas (e.g. Edinburgh , Dundee and Linlithgow). Other outputs included publicity for
a representative sample of sites, the maintenance of
diaries for each site and the development of the website,
which provides much more information.
The ultimate target is the recognition of the
importance of the built environment as a habitat and to
encourage those involved in the maintenance and
construction of the built environment to make
provisions for species - in this case swifts, but also
bats, house martins or black redstarts.
