SNS: Access to Services - Proposed Data Update

Thursday, November 1, 2007

Access to services data currently available on SNS, comes from two sources namely the Availability to Rural Services report published in October 2002 and

the drive times to key services, Primary and Secondary Schools, GP's, Post Offices, Petrol Stations and Retail Centres, from SIMD 2006 (please see the SIMD technical note for full details www.scotland.gov.uk/simd2006technical ). This information can be used to identify areas in which access to services is poor, assess location and characteristics of people with restricted access to essential services, improve access to services for excluded groups/communities. However, we would like to update this data and standardise the way we assess them in terms of drive-times and public transport times to these locations as of 2007.

We would welcome comments on these proposals and, in particular, the choice of key services chosen.

Thanks
SNS Team

SNS Data - Current & Future Coverage Plans

As part of the work to prepare for reporting on the Outcome Agreement Indicators I am currently looking at the scope of the data we hold & at the availability of data around the various indicators. I am aware that the Improvement Service are working on matching available datasets to outcomes/indicators & I have received valuable assistance from ScotPho at ISD in looking at the availability of data around the health indicators (as the updated Community Health Profiles won't be an exact match to the outcopme indicators), but feel it would be good if there were a downloadable list of all current SNS indicators by geography type & a future development paper outlining plans for data addition/deletion.

I agree that there is a need to update the data in particular as facilities open and close - current proposals to close Post Offices are perhaps the most obvious example.
On that, we used the access data in our reponse to the Post Office on the closures in our area.
I would welcome further information on the public transport times as I think we ought to be looking at frequency of services as well
