Information on the extent of Gaelic medium education is collected as part of the Scottish Government pupil census in Scotland. Information on Gaelic medium education was first collected in the pupil census in 2005 and this was continued in 2006.
Results from the Pupil Census carried out in September 2006 show that, in publicly funded schools:
- In 2006 there were 2,535 pupils receiving at least some of the curriculum (other than Gaelic) through Gaelic medium education.
- A further 1,596 were taught Gaelic only through the medium of Gaelic and another 5,333 were taught Gaelic as learner.
- Increases were seen from 2005 to 2006 for all of these categories, as shown in the table below:

- The number of school entries in 2004/05 for Higher grade Gaelic (learners) was 123. This was an increase of 20 compared ot the previous year.
- The number of school entries in 2004/05 for Higher grade Gaidhlig (not learners) was 115. This continues the upward trend seen in recent years and is 75% higher than the figure for 2001 (66 entries).
