Information on the extent of Gaelic medium education is collected as part of the Scottish Government pupil census in Scotland. Information on Gaelic medium education was first collected in the pupil census in 2005 and this was continued in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Results from the Pupil Census carried out in September 2008 show that, in publicly funded schools:
- In 2008, there were 2,766 pupils receiving at least some of the curriculum (other than Gaelic) through Gaelic medium education.
- A further 1,330 were taught Gaelic only through the medium of Gaelic.
