Pupil Numbers
In 2007 there were 692,215 pupils in publicly funded schools. The number has fallen from 763,539 in 1997. The latest projections suggest that pupil numbers in publicly funded schools are projected to decrease steadily to 658 thousand in 2014, then rise until peaking at 675 thousand in 2022. There were a further 30,981 pupils in independent schools in 2007, which equated to 4.3% of school pupils.
