Destinations of School Leavers
Just under 87 per cent of school leavers in 2007/08 were in positive destinations at September 2008, approximately 3 months after the 2007/08 school year ended.
Between 2006/07 and 2007/08 the proportion of leavers entering positive destinations - higher education, further education, employment, training or voluntary work - remained constant. There was an increase of around 3 percentage points in the proportion entering higher or further education, to just under 56 per cent. However, the proportion entering employment decreased by around 3 percentage points to a little over 25 per cent in the same period. The proportion of school leavers seeking employment or training in the autumn after leaving school has remained relatively stable at around 11 per cent since 2005/06.
The Scottish Government has established a National Indicator to increase the proportion of school leavers in positive and sustained destinations. The trends presented in the graph below represent a useful proxy measure of the Indicator, which will be monitored via a later follow-up survey of school leavers roughly 9 months after they left school.

Note (1): Leavers going onto voluntary work can be identified separately only from 2006/07, and would previously have been included with those unemployed and not seeking work.
