Destinations of School Leavers
Just under 86 per cent of school leavers in 2008/09 were in positive destinations at September 2009, approximately 3 months after the 2008/09 school year ended.
Between 2007/08 and 2008/09 the proportion of leavers entering positive destinations - higher education, further education, employment, training or voluntary work - fell by just under one percentage point. The proportions entering higher and further education increased by 3.8 and 2.2 percentage points respectively, to total just under 62 per cent. However, the proportion entering employment decreased by around 7 percentage points to a little over 18 per cent in the same period. The proportion of school leavers seeking employment or training in the autumn after leaving school has increase slightly to 11.5 per per cent.
The Scottish Government has established a National Indicator to increase the proportion of school leavers in positive and sustained destinations. The trends presented in the graph below represent a useful proxy measure of the Indicator, which will be monitored via a later follow-up survey of school leavers roughly 9 months after they left school.
