Pupil Attainment - Destinations of School Leavers

High Level Summary of Statistics Trend Last update: Friday, May 16, 2008

Destinations of School Leavers

Just under 87 per cent of school leavers in 2006/07 were in positive destinations at September 2007, approximately 3 months after the 2006/07 school year ended.

Between 2005/06 and 2006/07 there was an increase of just over one percentage point in the proportion of leavers entering higher education, further education, employment or training. Over half of 2006/07 school leavers went on to further or higher education, a slight decrease compared to 2005/06. However, the proportion entering employment increased by around 2 percentage points to a little over 28 per cent in the same period. The proportion of school leavers seeking employment or training in the autumn after leaving school has remained relatively stable at around 11 per cent in both 2005/06 and 2006/07.

The Scottish Government has established a National Indicator to increase the proportion of school leavers in positive and sustained destinations. The trends presented in the graph below represent a useful proxy measure of the Indicator, which will be monitored via a later follow-up survey of school leavers roughly 9 months after they left school.

Note (1): Other known destinations includes those leavers who are unemployed and seeking employment or training. Leavers who are unemployed but are not seeking employment or training (for a range of reasons such as sickness, prison, pregnancy, caring for children and other dependents or voluntary work) are also included.

Note (2): Leavers going onto voluntary work are included under 'other known destinations' for comparability with previous trends. From 2006/07 these leavers can be identified separately and included with other positive destinations where necessary. The 9 month follow-up survey will incorporate 'voluntary' within positive destinations.
