Housing Statistics for Scotland

The Housing Statistics for Scotland web tables contain a range of time series and summary tables available to download in Excel format. The tables were last updated on 27 August 2009 and include data on housing activity in Scotland up to 2008-09 (for annual data) 30 June 2009 (for social sector new build and affordable housing quarterly series) or 31 March 2009 for other quarterly series.

New tables have also been introduced on the full range of affordable housing activity funded by the Affordable Housing Investment Programme.

The Housing Statistics for Scotland 2009: Key Trends Summary, published in August 2009, contains an overview of the topics covered in the web tables.

Local Authority Housing Income & Expenditure

  • There will be an estimated 320,200 council houses in Scotland on 30 September 2009.
  • The 292,800 reduction in council housing stock in the 12 years between 30 September 1997 and 30 September 2009 was mainly due to a combination of around 150,000 sales to sitting tenants, around 100,000 houses transferred to housing associations and around 40,000 demolitions.
  • Average council rent in 2009-10 is £52.67 per week, ranging from £40.77 per week in Moray to £63.59 in Edinburgh. Since 1997-98 council rents have increased by around 1% per year in real terms - i.e. above the Retail Prices Index.
  • Average expenditure on management and maintenance is expected to be £1,882 per house, an increase of 5% or £87 per house over 2008-09.
  • Councils project that they will lose around £17 million due to unlet houses in 2009-10. This represents 2% of standard rent income and is at about the same level as last year.
  • Rent arrears at 31 March 2008 represented 4.4% of standard rental income. Housing debt in Scotland is expected to increase by 11% in the year to March 2010 to reach £2,200 million.
  • Shetland will continue to have the highest amount of debt - £25,300 per house at 31 March 2010, Orkney is expected to go into debt at £3,700 per house, leaving Falkirk with the lowest debt per house - £2,300 per house.
  • Local authorities' housing capital expenditure is projected to total £528 million in 2009-10, an increase of £30 million (6% increase) over 2008-09.
