Mortality Rates

Mortality rates from Scotland's leading causes of death- including cancer, coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke- are declining and stem from the impact of lifestyle improvements and improved health care.

The overall premature mortality rate in under 75s has dropped by 36%, from 686 per 100,000 in 1994 to 438 per 100,000 in 2013. This reflects a cumulative decline in cancer (26%, to 170 per 100,000), CHD (69%, to 57 per 100,000) and stroke (64%, to 20 per 100,000) mortality rates between 1994 and 2013.  Rates for other leading causes of death have also reduced, including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (11%, to 25 per 100,000), accidents (32%, to 13 per 100,000) and probable suicide (13%, to 15 per 100,000).  Alcohol deaths are higher than in 1994 (by 25%) but have declined by more than a third (36%, to 21 per 100,000) since an all-time peak in 2006.
