When will results by NHS Board and Local Authority be published?

The 2008-2011 survey was designed to give representative results for each NHS Board in Scotland after 4 years of data collection. The results for all NHS boards from the core survey were published in September 2012. The next publication of Health Board results will be in 2016 and will cover the four year period 2012-2015.  Health Boards with larger samples will be able to analyse their own data before this time.  A summary of when results for different sub-geographies can be analysed (ie by NHS Board, and by Local Authority) with associated measures of precision of these results.

There are no plans to publish results by local authority, although it may be possible to provide ad-hoc analysis on request for those LAs with a large enough sample.

Those interested in producing results from the child sample by NHS Board or Local Authority should note that the child sample was designed for national estimates only. Even with four years' data (ie 2008-2011) the combined child sample sizes for most Health Boards is still be too small to produce any sub-geography analysis. It may be possible to analyse the child sample (using the combined dataset with four years of data, 2008-2011) by NHS Health Board for some of the larger Boards, however, as mentioned above, this sample was not designed for this purpose. Therefore, we would stress extreme caution if interpreting results obtained by analysing the child sample by NHS Board or by Local Authority.

Monitoring change over time - revised NHS Board Boundaries

Note that in 2006 there was an adjustment to the administrative boundaries of NHS Greater Glasgow and NHS Highland following the dissolution of NHS Argyll and Clyde. As a consequence revised Health Board boundaries were produced. Hence analysis by NHS Board to specifically monitor change over time (pre and post 2003) must take account of these changes, ensuring the estimates produced from the 1998 and 2003 data are based upon the revised Health Board boundaries. For further details on monitoring change over time by NHS Board see our section Change over time taking note of the sub-geography analysis paper mentioned above.

Note that it is not possible to produce estimates from the 1995 survey by NHS Board due to the change or deletion of postcodes since 1995.

Our presentation at the November 2010 Public Health Conference gave an overview of NHS Health Board Analysis using the Scottish Health Survey 2008/2009 combined dataset. This presentation also included key results for eight NHS Boards with large enough sample sizes.
