Health Workforce

Around 70% of NHS expenditure is on staff. Between 2000 and 2007 there were significant increases in the headcount numbers of all qualified clinical staff: the number of qualified nurses and midwives grew by over 5,785 (9%), the number of consultants increased by almost 855 (27%); the number of General Dental Practitioners grew by 544 (27%), and the number of GPs grew by around 116 (3%). The number of AHPs grew by 2,497 to 10,981

At 30th September 2007 there were 162,139 staff in NHS Scotland. Almost half (42%) are in the Nursing & Midwifery staff group.
