Health Workforce

Around 70% of NHS expenditure is on staff. As at the 30th September 2011 there were 131,340 wte staff in post, a rise of 24,354 wte (up 22.8%). NHS Statistics show :

  • Consultants up 53.5% from 2,935 wte in September 1999 to 4,505 in September 2011
  • Other Doctors up 43.6% from 5,191 wte in September 1999 to 7,456 wte in September 2011
  • Qualified (AfC Band 5 to 9) Nurses & Midwives up 16.7% from 35,597 wte to 41,541 wte in September 2011
  • Other Qualified (AfC Band 5 to 9) Clinical staff up 38.4% from 13,397 wte to 18,539 wte in September 2011

As at 30th September 2011, 54.9% of the NHS Scotland workforce were qualified clinical staff, up from 53.4% in September 1999. The majority of the increase has been in the most recent 2 years.

From 1999 there have been significant rises in General Medical (GP's), and General Dental (GD's), Practitioners. GP's have steadily risen 21.2% from 4,072 in September 1999 to 4,937 in September 2011. For GD's, the rise is 52.5% from 1,999 in September 1999 to 3,048 in September 2011, with almost half (47.9%) of this increase in the last 4 years.
