Health Expenditure

Total expenditure on the NHS in Scotland in 2006/07 was £8.9bn. Of this, £7.8bn was spent by the Area Health Boards that provide hospital and community care. Details of this expenditure can be found in the NHS Cost Book

In 2006/07, 60% of Board expenditure was on hospital care, 13% on community health services and the remaining 27% on family healthcare.

£4.7bn of Board expenditure was spent on hospital care. Of the £2.1bn expenditure on family healthcare 52 per cent (£1.1 billion) was spent on community prescribing costs, one third was spent on primary medical services (GP practices) and the remainder was on dental and ophthalmic services .

In addition to NHS expenditure, Local Authorities spent £1.6 billion on providing community care in 2006/07.
