Adults with physical disabilities

Statistics are available across a range of services provided to adults with physical disabilities.

Physical Disabilities information

  • Care Homes for adults with physical disabilities
    In March 2006, there were 46 registered care homes for adults with physical disabilities, mainly run by the voluntary sector. These had 493 places.
  • Day Care services for adults with physical disabilities
    In 2006, there were 38 day care services catering for adults with physical disabilities. Almost 1,700 adults used these services in a typical week.
  • Home Care services for adults with physical disabilities
    In 2006, over 55,700 people with physical disabiltiies received home care services purchased or provided by local authorities in Scotland. Nearly three-quarters were aged over 75.
  • Special Needs Housing
    In 2003, there were nearly 26,000 adapted dwellings provided by public agencies and housing assoociations. This excludes housing for older people.
  • Direct Payments
    Number of people using direct payments to purchase services increasing every year. In 2006, 950 people with physical disabilities arranged their own services using direct payments.
  • Registered Blind and Partially Sighted Persons
    In 2006, the number of people registered as blind or partially sighted was estimated to be 36,996. Registration with Local Authorities for blind and partially sighted persons is not compulsory. Research studies suggest that between a quarter and a third of visually impaired people are in fact registered with Local Authorities.
