Productivity

Labour productivity - defined as Gross Domestic Product ( GDP) per hour worked - measures the amount of goods and services (output) produced from an hour of work. The most productive economies can produce higher levels of output from an hour of work. In 2006 Scotland was ranked 15th against the countries of the OECD, and is at the bottom of the second quartile. Norway had the highest levels of productivity in 2006. Scotland's productivity levels in 2006 were 87.5% of the levels in Germany, the country ranked at the bottom of the first quartile. Between 2005 and 2006 the gap between productivity levels in Scotland and the lowest ranked country in the top quartile (Germany) increased by 0.6 percentage points.
