Exports and GDP Growth

Exports data are taken from the Scottish Government's Global Connections Survey (GCS), which measures exports from Scotland to the rest of the world and to the rest of the UK. GDP estimates are taken from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) regional Gross Value Added (GVA) estimates (Regional Accounts). These are current price estimates in basic prices and do not include "extra regio" activity.

Over the period 2002 to 2005 exports have grown on average by 4.7% per annum. Over the same period GDP at current prices grew on average at higher rate of 5.4% per annum. In both 2004 and 2005 GDP grew at a higher rate than exports - at 2.2 percentage points higher in 2004, and 2.3 percentage points higher in 2005. In 2003 exports grew at 2.7 percentage points higher than GDP, resulting in a positive gap between the two growth rates.

The Scottish Government has established a National Indicator to grow exports at a faster average rate than GDP over the term of this Parliament.
