Scottish Export Statistics

Exports from Scotland to the rest of the UK (in development)

The Global Connections Survey requests information from companies in Scotland on sales to customers in the rest of the UK, as well as to those overseas. The data can be more difficult for companies to provide than international sales information, therefore estimates are based on less company information than exports to the rest of the world.

The estimates provided here relate to the period 2002 - 2007 and are classed as statistics "in development" in that they are the first analysis of the latest data. Comments and feedback are very much invited.

Main Findings

  • Total sales from Scotland to the rest of the UK were estimated to be worth £36.1 billion in 2007 compared to £27.2 billion in 2002.
  • The Scottish service sector accounted for £19.9 billion (55%) of sales to the Rest of the UK in 2007, with the manufacturing sector attributing £10.8 billion (30%).
  • The financial sector was responsible for 18% (£6.4 billion) of all exports to the rest of the UK. The wholesale, retail & repairs, hotels & restaurants sectors accounted for 14% (£5.2 billion) of all Scottish sales to the rest of the UK.

An article discussing the practical and theoretical difficulties involved in measuring Scotland's trade can be found in Scottish Economic Statistics 2005 publication: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2005/11/2485808/58104
