Domestic Abuse
There were 53,681 incidents of domestic abuse recorded by the police in 2008-09, compared to 49,655 incidents recorded in 2007-08. This equates to an increase of 8 per cent from 2007-08. This continues the steady increase in incidents being recorded since 1999-00, the first year data was recorded. Just over half of the incidents (55 per cent) recorded in 2008-09 led to the recording of a crime or an offence (29,283) and of these, 64 per cent were reported to the procurator fiscal (18,691).
