There were 80,502 cases initiated in the sheriff courts in 2011-12, a fall of 13 per cent from the 92,308 cases initiated in 2010-11. The number of cases disposed of also fell, from 87,504 in 2010-11 to 77,147 in 2011-12, a drop of 12 per cent. These figures are for ordinary cause, summary cause and small claims cases.
There were 4,754 first instance cases initiated in the Court of Session in 2011-12, 8 per cent fewer than the 5,176 cases initiated in 2010-11. The number of cases disposed of has increased, from 4,295 in 2010-11 to 4,856 in 2011-12, an increase of 13 per cent. [Figure 1]
