Criminal Appeals
A total of 2,191 criminal appeals were concluded in the High Court of Justiciary in 2008-09. This represents a decrease of 3% compared with 2007-08 and is 36% lower than the equivalent figure in 1999-00.

Note: A judicial direction in September 2002 meant that priority was given to dealing with solemn conviction appeals. Additional resources in the form of temporary judges were made available in January 2004 to help deal with the resulting backlog of appeals.
