Child Protection Statistics

Description: Local authorities have an obligation to ensure the security of children in their area. Such duties include a general requirement to uphold the welfare of children in need, and a specific duty to initiate inquiries into suspected cases of abuse, neglect, or lack of parental care. The statistics in this bulletin cover children referred to the authorities that are considered to be, or considered to have been, at risk.

Key Variables: Children referred for child protection inquiries, children subject to and registered after a case conference, children de-registered, number of children on child protection registers.

Figures available by: Gender, age group, placement of child prior to referral, primary known/ suspected abuser, category of abuse/ risk identified at conference, length of time of child protection register, local authority area.
