Introduction

What do these statistics cover?

Scottish Annual Business Statistics (SABS) provides data mainly on the Production (including Manufacturing), Construction and Service Sectors in Scotland. The Annual Business Survey, from which the statistics are largely derived, covers approximately two thirds of the economy. The main sectors not covered are parts of agriculture, financial and the public sector. These statistics are therefore best suited to the analysis of individual industries rather than the economy as a whole.

The Tables include information on businesses' employment, turnover, purchases, approximate gross value added and labour costs. Data are classified according to industry group, geographical area and ownership. All figures are at current prices unless otherwise stated.

What year do tables relate to?

Please note that Tables mainly contain 2008-2011 data published on a SIC 2007 basis only and were released on 28th August 2013.

When will the figures be updated?

New 2012 and revised 2011 figures are scheduled for release in August 2014.

Important news
  • This note is to advise users of on-going data issues surrounding Insurance and Reinsurance sector (covers SIC 65.1 & 65.2). Due to on-going volatility in the data, and following discussions with key users, results for Insurance and Reinsurance have been removed from Office for National Statistics (ONS) Annual Business Survey (ABS) release for reference year 2012 (this covers national figures published in November 2013), while a more detailed quality assessment is undertaken. Their removal does not affect other industries published as part of the ABS releases and has no impact on any other financial statistics published by the ONS.

Please note that regional data (includes Scotland) for this sector currently remains in 2008-11 Scottish Annual Business Statistics (SABS) Tables available on this web site to match regional totals previously published by ONS. However, results for this sector should be treated as experimental and any comparisons between years should be undertaken with caution. Plan is to remove Insurance and Reinsurance data from 2008-12 SABS Tables due to be published in August 2014. For more background information, please see Insurance and Reinsurance sector heading in Methodology & Notes.
  • In view of information above, Insurance and Reinsurance data (SIC 65.1 & 65.2) continues to be removed from Growth Sector table here and from Growth Sector database.
  • Industry profiles for Manufacturing, Spirits, Shipbuilding, Aerospace, Construction and Retail sectors are available here.
  • Historic Charts from 1950 onwards for Manufacturing sector only are available here.
