What do these statistics cover?
Scottish Annual Business Statistics (SABS) provides data mainly on the Manufacturing, Construction and Service Sectors in Scotland. The Annual Business Survey, from which the statistics are derived, covers approximately two thirds of the economy. The main sectors not covered are parts of agriculture, financial and the public sector. These statistics are therefore best suited to the analysis of individual industries rather than the economy as a whole.
The Tables include information on businesses' employment, turnover, purchases, approximate gross value added and labour costs. Data are classified according to industry group, geographical area and ownership. All figures are at current prices unless otherwise stated.
What year do tables relate to?
Please note that Tables contain 2008-2010 data published on a SIC 2007 basis only and were released on 29th August 2012.
When will the figures be updated?
New 2011 and revised 2010 figures are scheduled for release in August 2013, although this may be subject to change.
Important news
- Validation of data returns for 2011 have highlighted that a small number of businesses within the Insurance and Reinsurance sector (covers SIC 65.1 & 65.2) were returning global figures rather than UK only. Results for this sector are experimental and any comparisons between years should be undertaken with caution. Further validation is being undertaken and a revised 2010 estimate (together with new 2011 data) will be available in next SABS release due in August 2013. However, any global figures reported will remain in 2008 and 2009 published data in line with current Annual Business Survey (ABS) revisions policy.
- In view of information above, Insurance and Reinsurance data (SIC 65.1 & 65.2) has been removed from Growth Sector table here and from Growth Sector database. However, this data remains within other Tables published on SABS website in line with Scottish ABS totals published by the Office for National Statistics.
