Aquaculture Support
The total output of this sector is estimated to be around £434 million per year at farm gate, including around £412 million for farmed Atlantic salmon, £14.34 million for rainbow trout and £7.7 million for shellfish. Brown trout, sea trout, halibut and Arctic charr are also farmed in Scotland.
In 2009 alone, for example, 144,247 tonnes of Atlantic salmon was produced at 254 active marine sites and 6,302 tonnes of mussels.
In addition, much of aquaculture production is focussed on the West and North of the country and supports strong remote and rural communities in those areas including a number of full-time and part-time jobs.
