New SHS Publications

We would like to advise you of a new publication using SHS data. It is written by Tim Ryley who was one of the first users of SHS data, using 1999/2000 data for the Edinburgh area. The final output from this research was published late last year, in the academic journal 'Journal of Transport Geography'. The article is titled "Use of non-motorised modes and life stage in Edinburgh". The full reference is on our " Other Publications" page on our website.

If you have published any research which used SHS data, please tell us about it so we can share it with other SHS users.

Household Transport in 2005

The latest edition of this annual Transport Statistics bulletin, which presents some of the SHS's Transport-related results, was published on 27th October. As well as some topics which have been in the survey for several years (e.g. car availability, possession of driving licences, frequency of driving, walking and cycling, and travel to work and travel to school), this 80-page bulletin analyses the first year's results from a range of new questions which were added to the survey at the start of 2005 (e.g. views on motoring taxes and charges, traffic growth and congestion; use of motorbikes; awareness and use of Traveline Scotland; and use of concessionary fare passes). An electronic version is available via http://www.scotland.gov.uk/transtat/latest . Printed copies may be purchased (for 2 pounds) from Scottish Executive Publication Sales, Blackwell's Bookshop (tel: 0131 622 8283 or 8258; FAX 0131 557 8149).

Some of the SHS's Transport-related results also appear in "Main Transport Trends" and "Scottish Transport Statistics".

Changes to the Management

The SHCS (Scottish House Condition Survey) and the SHS management staff have been amalgamated within the Housing and Area Regeneration ASD in the Development Department of the Scottish Executive. We hope to front some joint initiatives on dissemination and promote more use of both data sets in the future. We plan that our next SHS user day will be a joint venture - with SHCS users present too. This event should take place in Autumn 2007. If you use both surveys and are willing to speak about your experiences - please get in touch with the SHS team.
