People who hold a full driving licence

SHS - Data trends - 2009 Q2 - Driving licence

Commentary

More than three-quarters of men aged 17+ have a full driving licence compared with around 62 per cent of women. There has been little change since 1999 in the male percentage, but the proportion of women who have a full driving licence has risen from 50 per cent in 1999 to 59 per cent.

The apparent quarter-to-quarter fluctuations in the figures may well be the result of sampling variability. Quarter-to-quarter changes should therefore be interpreted with caution.

Notes

Figures for previous quarters have been amended so that they are consistent with data from the second quarter of 2003. Since then information about driving licences has been collected from only one randomly selected adult member of the household.
