Outer Hebrides Region - Water & Soil

This table shows the regional priorities relevant to the region you have selected.

Each regional priority has a unique code (column one) which will help you to identify your selected priorities when completing your Statement of Intent/Proposal.

The detailed description (column two) has been provided to help you understand the implications and outcomes being sought by each priority.

The package numbers (column three) will help you to cross reference those relevant packages to the regional priority you have selected, with the full list of packages detailed on the right hand side of the page.

OHE16

Reduced diffuse pollution from rural land uses. Particularly proposals that:

27

OHE17

Improved water quality of surface water and ground water bodies supported by a 'Soils and Water Plan', with priority given to actions in shellfish growing waters and Drinking Water Protected Areas. Particularly proposals that:

  • contribute significantly to improved surface water and ground water quality adjacent to or within shellfish, bathing water catchments, drinking water protected areas or water bodies categorised as '1a' (at risk) status.
27-30

OHE18

Good ecological status of at risk water bodies (including 1A category) (by 2015), through priorities identified in the West Highland River Basin Management Plan. Particularly proposals:

  • for land management measures that will help to improve or prevent further deterioration in ecological status of at risk water bodies (Including category 1a), with the aim of achieving good ecological status by 2015, including:
  1. habitat improvements which address morphological pressures (i.e. engineering structures, straightened water bodies) by removing or altering engineering structures, re-instating natural water course, riparian planting, etc .
  2. forest management
  3. intensive livestock grazing and housing
  4. operations involving the management of waste products from rural businesses.
27-30

OHE19

Sustainable flood management and reduced flood risk (including adaptation to climate change), through appropriate land management, particularly actions identified in the West Highland River Basin Management Plan:

  • proposals that involve land management which contributes to reduced flood risk, such as the restoration of coastal habitats and native woodland riparian corridors, particularly where identified in the West Highland River Basin Management Plan.
32

OHE20

Improved protection in areas identified as most at risk from erosion, flooding, acidification and nitrate pollution, through appropriate management of existing habitats (e.g. improvement of stability of coastal habitats) or the creation of appropriate habitats (e.g. floodplains and along river edges), or organic conversion or maintenance. Particularly proposals that:

  • prevent, remedy or reduce the risk of erosion, flooding, acidification and nitrate pollution from land management actions, particularly in areas identified in the West Highland River Basin Management Plan
  • develop integrated coastal and land management, reducing the impact of erosion, including beach management measures
  • will create riparian woodland and in particular where assessment has identified a benefit to the ecological status.
