Adaptations to Mitigate Climate Change Priorities

GRA21

Improved carbon sequestration, through conservation of soil organic matter, e.g. through organic conversion or maintenance, and, expansion of woodlands (in preferred areas identified in regional Indicative Forestry Strategies or Woodland Strategies) where such contribute towards meeting targets in Scotland's Climate Change Programme. Particularly proposals which:

  • contribute to the expansion of productive (broad-leaved and conifer) and native woodlands as per Moray, Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City Forest and Woodland Strategies, Cairngorms Forest and Woodland Framework and for native woodland the Grampian Forest Habitat Networks
  • develop short rotation forestry.

GRA22

  • Reduced emissions of greenhouse gases from land based operations, through use of 'green' technologies, appropriate management practices (e.g. organic conversion or organic maintenance, targeted fertiliser applications) and minimising emissions from every stage in the supply chain. Particularly proposals which:
  • support storage and targeted use of FYM/slurry, use of biofuels in appropriate situations and other low energy systems and processes, including bio-mass heating
  • innovative solutions to minimise emissions.

GRA23

Improved carbon sinks, through an increase in the use of low impact silvicultural systems within existing woodlands, and promotion of peat bog and woodland regeneration/restoration, particularly in areas where they have greatest benefit for long-term carbon storage. Particularly proposals to:

  • restructure even-aged forests through Forest Plans and extend the use of Low Impact Silvicultural Systems where feasible, particularly in Scots pine
  • protect existing and, where feasible, restore degraded peatland, lowland and blanket bogs.

GRA24

An efficient and reliable wood fuel supply chain, through the development and sustainable management of short rotation coppice, short rotation forestry, biomass and bio-fuel crops and other renewable energy projects on appropriate sites. Particularly proposals which:

  • support for the management of existing woodlands for increased woodfuel supply and recovery particularly from farm woodland
  • contribute to the establishment of sustainable woodfuel supply chains across Grampian
  • develop short rotation forestry.
