Borders Region - Public Access Priorities

This table shows the regional priorities relevant to the region you have selected.

Each regional priority has a unique code (column one) which will help you to identify your selected priorities when completing your Statement of Intent/Proposal.

The detailed description (column two) has been provided to help you understand the implications and outcomes being sought by each priority.

The package numbers (column three) will help you to cross reference those relevant packages to the regional priority you have selected, with the full list of packages detailed on the right hand side of the page

25. Improved public access provision through the creation, improvement and promotion of paths and other facilities,* with priority given to:

(*other facilities refers to bridges, toilets, car parking, dog-walking areas, launch sites with changing areas, informal campsites, etc.)

a. An increase in quality and provision of routes in and around communities (particularly where health and community need is greatest):

  • priority will be given to projects which contribute towards completion of the 'Scottish Borders Paths Around Programme'
  • projects should seek to make links and develop opportunities from the New Ways 'Paths To Health Project'.

b. An increase in quality and provision of routes between communities. Particularly:

  • projects should contribute to the route networks identified in the Scottish Borders Core Path Plan, Scottish Borders Access Strategy and Scottish Borders Local Transport Strategy
  • priority will be given to routes that contribute to the achievement of the aspirational links between communities as identified in the Core Path Plan.

c. An increase in quality and provision of routes to, through, and along places of interest, e.g. coasts, woodlands, inland water, uplands, viewpoints, river corridors, historical sites: Particularly proposals that:

  • improve quality thresholds on multi-user routes that provide more inclusive access, including disabled access. Priority would be given to proposals on promoted routes including: Southern Upland Way, Borders Abbeys Way, St Cuthbert's Way, John Buchan Way, Berwickshire Coast Path, Dere Street, Waverley Way, Cheviot Hills Cross Border Project
  • support proposals that provide key links to adventure sports locations.

d. Improvements in integration between access and land management:

  • priority will be given to proposals the enhance access/land management integration in NSAs, the settlement coalescence study, and opportunities arising from the Greenspace/Open Space Strategy.

e. Improvements in facilities for specific user groups including all abilities. Particularly proposals that:

  • include facilities for walkers, mountain-bikers, canoeists, horse-riders, divers, wildlife clubs, and community interest groups.

f. Improving users' and land managers understanding of outdoor access and land management issues in the context of the Scottish Outdoor Access Code through provision of interpretation, signage, leaflets, presentations, workshops and site visits. Particularly proposals that:

  • build on existing local sources of outdoor information will be supported. This could include information from Borders FWAG, Scottish Borders Countryside Ranger Service and Scottish Borders Access Forum.

g. Assistance with the suitable implementation and monitoring of core paths and routes identified in core paths plans. Particularly proposals that:

  • contribute to the implementation and monitoring of the Scottish Borders Core Path Plan. Priority will be given to proposals on routes that are more heavily used and closer to settlements.
