Borders Region - Built & Cultural Heritage Priorities

This table shows the regional priorities relevant to the region you have selected.

Each regional priority has a unique code (column one) which will help you to identify your selected priorities when completing your Statement of Intent/Proposal.

The detailed description (column two) has been provided to help you understand the implications and outcomes being sought by each priority.

The package numbers (column three) will help you to cross reference those relevant packages to the regional priority you have selected, with the full list of packages detailed on the right hand side of the page

15. Conservation and enhancement of the historic environment, with priority given to proposals that:

a. Enhance and conserve the most significant rural vernacular buildings, archaeological or historic sites and historic landscapes. Particularly proposals that:

  • encourage active management to improve the condition of vernacular rural buildings, archaeological or historical sites and historic landscapes, with preference given to those implementing management plans/design guidance
  • enhance significant features identified within Volume 5: Lothian and Borders (1988) An Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes and subsequently those identified in the Borders Landscapes Study 2007
  • enhance and repair to listed Buildings and Scheduled Ancient Monuments will be given priority.

BOR15b

b. Help to maintain local distinctiveness and promote local identity and pride of place through the management of vernacular rural buildings, archaeological or historic sites and historic landscapes. Particularly proposals that:

  • support for proposals that encourage involvement of communities in developing enhanced understanding and enjoyment of their local resources
  • support in the use of local vernacular materials, e.g. the use of lowland thatch.

c. Contribute to the preservation and development of skills and employment opportunities through the management of vernacular rural buildings, archaeological or historic sites and historic landscapes. Particularly proposals that:

  • seek to support the development of skills and learning in traditional techniques through the management of a specific building or site where this will assist development of a business.

d. Increase public appreciation and understanding of, and access to, the historic environment. Particularly proposals that:

  • enhance access to, and interpretation of, significant historic sites.

Priority will be given for historic sites adjacent to the proposed Core Path Network.

BOR15e

e. Improve the viability of existing rural building stock, achieved by increasing the number and range of vernacular rural buildings that can be made viable or can continue to be viable for use. Particularly proposals that:

  • encourage the appropriate conversion of redundant traditional farm buildings, priority will be given for proposals within Eildon/Leaderfoot and Upper Tweeddale National Scenic Areas (NSAs)
