Support Outline of strategy to assist crofting

The Executive safeguards crofting communities through special support schemes for crofters

and through the range of grants and subsidies for agriculture and rural development in the Highlands and Islands

Crofting plays a vital role in maintaining population in remote rural areas . provides a secure base for the development of small businesses. maintains and supports a range of unique habits . Provision for specific support to crofting amonts to £7m per annum. the Executive also funds the Crofters Commission (budget £2.7m) which regulates and organises crofting and promotes the interest of crofters. Crofters may also benefit from conventional agricultural and environmenttal schemes and from EC funded programmes.``
