In addition to its core activities of funding and supporting research, CSO has other, equally important, roles including:

• participating in a number of national and UK wide research initiatives, including the UK Clinical Research Collaboration, the National Translational Cancer Research Network, UK Biobank, Genetics and Healthcare Initiative, the National Prevention Research Initiative and initiatives for Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals
• encouraging multidisciplinary, collaborative research
• promoting dissemination and implementation of research findings
• improving how NHS organisations use their Intellectual Property
