Chief Scientist Office (CSO) healthcare scientists

The Chief Scientist Office (CSO) of the Scottish Government Health Directorates is responsible for managing a budget of around £62 million (2007-8) to support and encourage research to improve the health of the people in Scotland and the services provided by the NHS.

Funding is focused on defined priorities or NHS needs and follows the Research Strategy for Health and Healthcare

There are a number of specific areas CSO is responsible for including:

  • Supporting research in the NHS
  • Funding high quality research projects
  • Building capacity for research in the NHS
  • Ensuring research in the NHS is carried out to high standards
