CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE

1. SSAP Papers 2006/03, 2006/13 and 2006/22 set out the background to this initiative. Work on this research contract commenced on 1 October 2006.

ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH RESEARCH PROGRAMME

2. SSAP Papers 2006/04, 2006/14 and 2006/22 set out the background to this new Initiative on Environment and Health. This paper provides an update on the progress made by SEERAD on the introduction of this Programme.

3. The Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) resulted in 32 EOIs being received. A review panel has met and 11 EOIs have now been invited to submit full proposals by 27 February 2007.

4. Outline Timetable

By 27 February 2007: Full proposals received

By 30 April 2007: Funding decisions made

01/06/07: Awards available

RESEARCH COMMISSIONING

5. Funding for the 3 remaining Work Packages 1.7, 3.1 and 3.5 has now been confirmed.

PROGRAMME ASSESSMENT EXERCISE (PAE)

6. A consultation paper on the Programme Assessment Exercise 2008-2009 setting out the aims, objectives, timetable and processes that will be needed for the major assessment of the SEERAD research programmes is currently being prepared.

7. The PAE will assess various aspects of the research programmes including Relevance, Quality of Science, and knowledge transfer.

8. The consultation paper will be discussed with the Main Research Providers in late January and thereafter SSAP members will also be asked to comment on this consultation.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEXT STRATEGY

9. A paper outlining the process to be followed to develop the next SEERAD research strategy is in preparation. The role of the SSAP in the strategy review development will be included in this paper.
