Young People Leaving Care

We need to ensure that young people leaving care are supported to make a successful transition to independent adult living. The aim is to provide a joined up service for young people leaving care from local authorities across employment, housing, training, social work and health, with a comprehensive assessment of their needs and a key worker to advise them.

The report of the expert working group on throughcare and aftercare which made a number of recommendations to improve the service provided to young people was published by The Scottish Executive in August 2002. Draft Regulations and Guidance for local authorities were published on 31 July 2003 and will come into effect in April 2004.
