Intercountry Adoption

A number of people in Scotland each year choose to adopt from overseas. In general applicants need to follow similar processes to those followed in domestic adoptions, although there can be special requirements, depending on circumstances and the country concerned.

People in Scotland who are considering adopting from abroad are advised initially to contact their local authority social work department for advice on the processes involved in adopting from overseas. General advice and information about intercountry adoption is also available from the Adoption and Permanence Branch of the Scottish Executive Education Department Looked After Children and Youthwork Division, Victoria Quay, Edinburgh, EH6 6QQ. Advice on individual countries is available on the Department for Education and Skills website -

http://www.dfes.gov.uk/intercountryadoption/countries.shtml.

Once applicants have been approved as prospective adopters and are ready to submit their applications, the relevant documents should be sent to the address above.
