About the Charter

Protecting Children and Young People - The Charter

Protecting Children and Young People: The Charter was launched by the First Minister, Jack McConnell, and Deputy First Minister, Jim Wallace, on 22 March 2004.

The Charter sets out what children and young people need and expect to help protect them when they are in danger of being, or already have been, harmed by another person.

It has been developed, by Save the Children, talking to children and young people who have experienced the need to be protected and supported - but what they are saying is how any child facing difficulties could expect to be treated.

The response to the 13 statements from children is a set of 11 pledges and an outline of work to be done to help deliver on these.

The Scottish Executive is committed to delivering improved services for children and young people. As part of the Child Protection Reform Programme, a Framework for Standards for child protection has been developed which builds on these Charter statements and the pledges made to help deliver better, more joined-up, child focused services for vulnerable children and young people.

The Explanatory Booklet provides the details of how the Charter was developed and the background to the 13 Charter statements.
