Race

The picture for minority ethnic groups tends to be very mixed with some groups doing much better than others. For example, although people of Chinese and Indian origin tend to be relatively well represented in the labour market, in terms of highly qualified work, people of Pakistani, Bangladeshi and African Caribbean origin have very different experiences. Not only are Pakistani and Bangladeshi men more likely to be unemployed than white men, they are also likely to experience lower levels of pay. Women of Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin are significantly less likely to be working than white women. It has been suggested that there is a link between discrimination in the labour market and the trend towards high levels of self-employment for Pakistani and Bangladeshi men. This picture is further compounded by gender, disability and age.

• Ethnic Minorities & Their Pensions Decisions (2001) Looks at the ability of Bangladeshi, Pakistani and white men living in Oldham to make informed choices between alternative forms of second tier pensions provision.
• Ethnic Groups & Low Income Distribution (1999) This study shows great diversity in the experience of those on low income according to their ethnic group.
• The Incomes of Ethnic Minorities (1998) Analysing the Family Resources Survey, the report shows that there is wide diversity of income between minority groups.
• Young Caribbean Men & the Labour Market: A Comparison With Other Ethnic Groupsn (1996) It has long been known that people from ethnic minorities suffer disadvantage in employment, but recent work has shown a gap opening between different minority ethnic groups. This analysis compares young Caribbean men with those from selected ethnic groups.
• The Provision of Social Security Benefits to Minority Ethnic Communities (1994) Studies the perceptions and experiences of both claimants and non-claimants from five minority groups, and their interaction with the Benefit Agency, the local authority and local advice centres.

The Home Office

• The Labour Market Outcomes & Psychological Well-Being of Ethnic Minority Migrants in Britain (2003) This study examines the quantitative significance of these factors in influencing ethnic minority migrants' access to employment and their participation in the labour force and in determining the psychological and psychosocial well-being of ethnic minority migrants living in England.

Department for Work and Pensions

• Delivering Benefits and Services for Black and Minority Ethnic Older People (2003)

  This study is a qualitative research project which aimed to understand the barriers to the take-up of benefits (specifically the Minimum Income Guarantee) among black and minority ethnic (BME) older people.
